Nomingia (noh-ming-ee-uh) was an oviraptorosaurian theropod dinosaur hailing from the Late Cretaceous Bugin Tsav Beds. The remains, consisting of vertebral series, pelvic girdle and left tibio-tarsus, was described by Barsbold et al. in 2000. |
Nomingia is characterized by a pygostyle-like mass of fused vertebrae at the tail end probably supporting a feather fan. This bone structure had only been found in birds before this fossil was discovered. Nomingia was an omnivorous creature that grew to 1.6 metres in length. It was active in the Maastrichtian era of the Cretaceous, around 72-68 million years ago. |
