Gargoyleosaurus (gar-GOYL-e-o-SAWR-us) parkpinorum is both the smallest and earliest known ankylosaur. |
It was discovered at the Bone Cabin Quarry West locality, in Albany County, Wyoming, in exposures of the Upper Jurassic (Kimmeridgian-Tithonian) Morrison Formation. Gargoyleosaurus (meaning "gargoyle lizard") was an armored dinosaur that lived during the late Jurassic period, about 154 to 144 million years ago. A plant-eater, it walked on four short legs and was about 10 feet (3-4 metres) long. Its body armor consisted of thin-walled cones plus two shoulder spines. Its skull measures only 29 cm. in length, and it may have weighed as much as a ton. |
