Arrhinoceratops

Arrhinoceratops - Meaning: without-nose-horn face

Arrhinoceratops (aye-RYE-no-SER-uh-tops), is the name given to a genus of ceratopsian dinosaur. The name was derived as its original describer concluded it had no nose-horn, however further analysis revealed this not to be the case. Arrhinoceratops lived during the Late Cretaceous 72 - 67 million years ago, although Arrhinoceratops predates its famous relative Triceratops by a few million years, being found in the early Maastrichtian period. Arrhinoceratops remains have been found in Canada.

Arrhinoceratops Characteristics

Since this dinosaur is known only from its skull, scientists know little about its over-all anatomy. The skull features a broad neck frill with two oval shaped openings. Its brow horns were moderately long, but its nose horn was shorter and blunter than most Ceratopsians. Its body is assumed to be typical of the Ceratopsians, and based on the skull it is estimated to be 20 feet (6 metres) long when fully grown. Arrhinoceratops probably weighed around 3,500 kilograms (7,000 pounds).

Arrhinoceratops, like all Ceratopsians, was a herbivore. During the Cretaceous, flowering plants were 'geographically limited on the landscape', and so it is likely that this dinosaur fed on the predominant plants of the era such as ferns, cycads and conifers. Arrhinoceratops would have used its sharp Ceratopsian beak to bite off the leaves or needles.

Arrhinoceratops was discovered in Alberta, Canada in 1923, and was named two years later by William Parks.

Arrhinoceratops means 'without nose horn'. This name was given to Arrhinoceratops because when it was discovered a nose horn was not found. However, many scientists today believe that Arrhinoceratops did in fact possess a nose horn.
